Pocono Skiing
Let's face it... Pocono skiing rocks. The Poconos are known for many wonderful things, and snow skiing is most definitely one of them. The location of the Pocono Mountains is convenient to commuters from NYC and Northern NJ and the mountainous terrain of the Poconos make it the ideal area for winter fun.
Numerous ski areas are in operation throughout the Poconos, and they are all easily accessible from the major highways Interstate 80, 81, 84, and 380. We have listed all the local ski areas as well as a direct link to the current ski conditions of each.
Pocono Ski Conditions

Pocono Skiing at Camelback
Camelback Ski Resort With 34 trails and 14 ski lifts, Camelback Ski resort is a must-go for Pocono skiers. It is located in Tannersville with easy access from Interstate 80 near the Pocono Crossings shopping plaza.
They're also known for Camelbeach, their elaborate water-park, of course only open in the summer months. But this could be the top Pocono skiing area of all just based on size and amount of trails. There is a good mix of skiing for all levels of ability.
Pocono Skiing at Shawnee
Shawnee Mountain is a must-go ski area located just off Interstate 80 near Stroudsburg.
If you are visiting the Poconos in the summer months you would recognize Shawnee as the site of the famous Garlic Festival along with other good time food and fun events. As for Pocono skiing, Shawnee offers up a good mix with plenty of terrain for beginners.
They have one high speed quad lift, one fixed-grip quad lift, four double lifts and four carpet style lifts for those who like to know their capacity. Their trail map depicts a total of 23 trails of Pocono skiing delight.
Pocono Skiing at Alpine
Alpine Mountain is a family-friendly ski area located in the Pocono heart of Analomink. This is a very casual place to learn to ski and board or just snow tube (if you enjoy bouncing down hills uncontrollably).
Their trail map depicts a total of 21 trails for your Pocono skiing pleasure. You can't help but have fun on a mountain with trails appropriately named Power Line, Downfall, and Dipsey Doo.
Pocono Skiing at Jack Frost
Big Boulder / Jack Frost Ski Resort JFBB is said to offer the best skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing, in the Poconos. It is easily accessed from the Mount Pocono exit of interste 380 in Lake Harmony.
Their claim to fame is that they are typically the first Pocono ski area to open annually. The twin mountains offer up some great terrain and an even assortment of trails for every level of skier. These two mountains are not located on the same property, but are a short drive from each other.
Pocono Skiing at Big Bear
Ski Bigbear Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain is a gem and a great place to learn to ski and snowboard.
There is a good mix of terrain, allowing skiers to gradually progress, but also allowing more advanced friends and family who may not be beginners, to ski or snowboard more challenging trails. Bigbear Ski area (or Masthope Mountain) is located near Lackawaxen in the lovely Pocono Mountains.
Pocono Skiing at Tanglwood
Tanglwood Ski Area Closed Sadly, the Tanglwood Ski Area has closed. We have not found an official closure announcement, however all signs of life have left the slopes, the chair lifts have been removed, and the signage marking the entrance to the ski area has been taken down.
An auction held at the site last year which is a clear indication of its closure. (Read more...). Tanglwood Ski Area is located near Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos and is easily accessible from Interstate 84.
Skiing at Montage
Montage Mountain Located just a few minutes from the Pocono Mountains, Scranton, and Wilkes-Barre, Montage Mountain features a decent mix of beginner and expert trails. It was formerly known as Sno Mountain ski area, but changed hands over the years.
The current owners have managed to provide overall good skiing for NEPA and the Pocono region despite some uncooperative winters. They break down their trail system as 35% Beginner and Easiest, 25% Novice, 15% Intermediate/More Difficult, 15% Advanced, 10% Expert and Most Difficult. Stay tuned as the old name of Montage Mountain may be returning for next season.
Skiing at Elk
Elk Mountain is known as Pennsylvania best skiing.
Elk is know for its diverse terrain comparable to skiing in Vermont, yet located in the Endless Mountains of NEPA. Elk would be a bit more of a drive from the Poconos, however, if you've met anyone who has ever skied Elk, they will simply tell you it is worth the drive.
Elk is located in the Endless Mountains, a short drive to the North on Interstate 81 and you might think you're in vermont.
